The book surveys the pivotal strategic thinkers from Dmitrii Miliutin, Aleksandr Svechin and Andrei Snesarev to Makhmut Gareev, Andrei Kokoshin, and Valerii Gerasimov. Russian military thought is understudied in the West, but it is critical to fill this gap in order to avoid strategic surprise. Furthermore, Persson shows that military strategic thought is closely linked to Russia's existence as a state and explains patterns of Russian confrontation. Strategy in Russia encompasses the broader context of foreign and domestic policy as well as the military's ties to the country's leadership.
